A little piece of Tuscany in the heart of Germany
High on a terraced hill top, looking out over the quaint city of Baden-Baden, the New Castle has dominated the town's landscape for centuries. Its characteristic
Orangery building is situated at the top of the Florentine Hill (Florentiner Berg) - terraced gardens full of herbs and exotic plants that face the southern sunlight. Looking up from the town you can see the wonderful profile of the main castle with its whimsical dragon taking flight from the Tower.
Visitors can take the “New Castle steps” up the Florentine Hill from the old quarter of town behind the Market Square where the Catholic Collegiate Church is located. At the top of the stairs is a stone terrace where a spectacular view of Baden-Baden and the Black Forest Mountains can be enjoyed.
The city of Baden Baden is famous from ancient Roman times for its hot springs which originate at the foot of the Florentine Hill. These underground thermal spring waters are called the Fettquelle. They are a temperature of 63°C and have been used by the famous Friedrichsbad spa and the modern Caracalla Therme spa for their extensive indoor and outdoor bathing and spa therapy facilities.
To the east of the Castle lie the extensive Botanical Gardens. These gardens have been laid out over the centuries by different designers and today the park is defined by terraces, wisteria covered pergolas, stone stairways linking different park areas, a Romanesque Grotto, rock sculptures, fountains and statues. Among all of this are very beautiful and majestic ancient trees, some brought from far away places and considered very exotic and unique for Germany.
